You start with the light side, but when someone discards a FLIP card (a card that switches sides), the deck is flipped over (and the cards in your hand are flipped over as well), and then all the players have to play with the dark side.

The dark side has different action cards with much harsher penalties. A player must play the dark side cards until someone else discards another FLIP card and then everyone starts playing the light side of the cards, and so on until one player has discarded all the cards in their hand and the round is over.

As always, if you are the first player to discard all the cards you have in a round, you get points for the cards that are left in your opponents' hands. The rounds are cumulative and the first player to score 500 points wins.

Remark: don't forget to count the points according to which side (light or dark) the game is over.

Preparing for the game

  1. As the deck is double-sided, make sure that all the cards on each side of the deck are turned over the same way: all the cards on the light side must be brought to one side, and all the cards on the dark side to the other side.
  2. Each player draws a card and then turns over the light side. The player who draws the highest number becomes the dealer (any card drawn with a symbol counts as zero).
  3. The dealer shuffles and deals 7 cards to each player. The cards must be held with the light side facing you and the dark side facing your opponents.
  4. Place the remaining deck of cards, light side down, to form a "draw" deck (dark side cards must be face up).
  5. The top card of the 'draw' deck is flipped over to start the 'discard' deck (the cards on the light side will face up).

The person to the left of the dealer starts the game.

Whether you are playing on the light or dark side, during your turn you must match the card in your hand with the card that is first in the discard pile, which you can do by selecting a card based on a number, colour or symbol (symbols refer to the action cards).

If you don't have a card that matches the card in the discard deck, you must take another card from the draw deck.

Remark: if you pick up new cards, make sure they are the same side as the other cards in your hand.

For example, if you are currently playing on the light side of the cards, then take new cards into your hand that are face up on the light side.

If the card you picked up is the right one, you are free to put it down on the same turn. Otherwise, the game moves on to the next person.

You can also choose not to discard a card from your hand. If you choose to do so, you must take a card from the draw pile. If you draw a suitable card, you may discard it on the same turn, but you may not discard another card from your existing hand after the draw.

The bright side

Draw One Card (Draw One Card)
Draw one card UNO FLIP rules

When you use this card, the other player must take one card and skip his turn.

This card can only be used if it matches the suit or if it is matched with another ("Take One") card. If it is discarded at the beginning of the game, the same rule applies.

Reverse Card
Turning card

When this card is used, the direction of play changes (if the game is currently going left, then the game changes to the right and vice versa).

This card can only be used with a matching suit or another card that changes the direction of play.

If this card is turned up at the start of the game, the dealer will start the turn first and the game will then move to the right instead of the left.

Skip a turn (Skip Card)
Skip a move

When you discard this card, the other player is "skipped", i.e. (loses his turn). This card can only be played if it matches a suit, or with another card that means you are skipping a turn.

If a "skip" card is turned up at the start of the game, the player to the dealer's left has to skip a turn, so the player to that player's left starts the turn.

Wild Card
Wild Card - UNO FLIP game

When you use this card, you can choose a colour that continues the game (any colour is fine, including the colour used before the Wild card was played).

You can use a Wild card during your turn, even if you have a matching playing card.

If a Wild card is turned up at the start of the game, the person to the left of the dealer chooses the colour that continues the game.

Special (Wild) Card - draw two cards (Wild Draw 2)
Wild two-card draw card

When you use this card, you must choose a colour to continue the game and, in addition, the other player must take two cards from the draw pile and skip his turn.

Important! This card can only be used when you do not have another card matching the colour of the discard pile (but you can play this card if you have the corresponding number or action cards).

If you drew this card at the start of the game, return this card to the deck and select another card.

Remark: If you suspect that a "Special (Wild Card) - Draw Two" card has been illegally discarded (i.e. the player has the correct card), then you can check that player.

The player being tested must show you or (your opponent) his cards. If he is wrong, the checked player must take 2 cards instead of you. However, if the verified player is innocent, then you must draw 2 cards and 2 more cards for a total of (4) cards!

Flip card
Flip card board and card game UNO FLIP

When you start playing this card, everything turns from the light side to the dark side. Once the "Reverse" card is face up, turn over the "Discard" deck (the card you just played will now be on the bottom), then turn over the "Draw" deck, and finally turn the cards in your hand over to the other side.

This new side will be played until the next "Reverse" card is discarded, which will change sides again. This card can only be used with a matching suit or another "Reverse" card.

The dark side

Draw Five Cards (Draw Five Card)
Take five cards

When you discard this card, the other player must take five cards and skip his turn.

This card can only be used with a matching suit or with another "Draw Five" card.

Reverse Card
Change direction dark card

When you start playing this card, the direction of the game changes (if the game is currently going to the left, then the game changes to the right and vice versa).

This card can only be used with a matching suit or with another "Reverse" card.

Skip Everyone Card (Skip Everyone Card)
Skip all moves card

When you start playing this card, all players are "skipped" (lose their turn). The player who placed the card then starts playing.

This card can only be used with a matching suit or with another "Everybody Misses a Turn" card.

Wild Card
Wild Dark Card

When you start playing this card, you can choose the colour that will continue to be played (any colour, including the colour that was played before the "Special (Wild)" card was placed).

You can use a "Special (Wild)" card during your turn, even if you have another suitable playing card in your hand.

Special (Wild) Choose a colour court (Wild Draw Colour Card)
Wild Card Pick a Colour - UNO FLIP card and board game

When you start playing this card, the other player must draw as many cards as he or she can until he or she finds a card of the suit of your choice (no matter how many cards he or she has to draw), and loses his or her turn. However, there is an obstacle!

This card can only be used when you do not have another card that matches the colour of the card in the "discard" pile (but you can play this card if you have the appropriate number or action cards).

Note: If you suspect that a "Special (Wild) Pick a Colour" card has been illegally discarded (i.e. the player has the card in question), you can check that player.

The player being tested must show you (the opponent) his cards. If guilty, the verified player must draw as many cards as he can until he finds the colour of your choice. However, if the verified player is right, you must take as many cards as you can until you find the colour of your choice, plus 2 more cards!

Flip Card
Turning card dark

When you start playing this card, all the cards change from the dark side to the light side.
When the "Reverse" card is dealt, flip over the entire deck of discarded cards so that the card you just discarded is at the bottom. In addition, turn over the deck of cards drawn and the cards in your hand.

This new side must be played until the next "Reverse" card is revealed, which will again change the suits. This card can only be used with the matching suit or with another "Reverse" card.

End of game

Whether you are playing with the light or the dark side of the cards, when you deal before the last card, you must shout "UNO" (meaning "one") to indicate that you have only one card left. If you don't say "UNO" and you are caught before the next player's turn, you will have to take two cards.

When a player is out of cards, the round ends. The points are counted and the game restarts.

UNO FLIP rules state that if the last card of the round is a "Pick One Card", "Pick Five Cards", "Special (Wild) Card - Pick Two Cards" or "Special (Wild) Pick a Colour" card, the other player must pick one, five, two or until they receive a card of the suit of their choice. These cards are counted in the total points.

If one player runs out of cards before then, when the draw pile runs out, the discard pile is shuffled and play continues.
